HUNGRY WINDOW
About the Artist
I am Rhory - I paint under the name Hungry Window and have been working in illustration and mural painting for around 10 years, with a much more recent focus on making site specific street art and public art. I mostly make art as a way for me to process the world around me and communicate my feelings through painting. It has been a great opportunity for me to meet and connect with my community in a more meaningful way. Whether that's through making connections with other artists, or having conversations with the public about my artwork, street art and graffiti in general, making art in the street has become my main focus over the last few years. It is a liberating experience to take back some control over your lived environment and use that space to communicate yours and other experiences. My work is often based around portraiture. Usually aiming to communicate a feeling, emotion or vague narrative through my painting. I enjoy creating characters and scenes based on people I meet or am inspired by, and places I have visited or dreamed of. I think that by creating paintings in public spaces you can act as a positive interruption and offer a window into another world. I like making paintings that give the viewer a chance to pause and enter a brief state of introspection, wonder or even play.
The Proposal
If given the opportunity, I would like to create a series of paintings of fantastical, fictional ‘explorers or adventurers’, in different contexts along Byres Road. Using the street furniture, shutter spaces and different elements of the environment to tell their stories. As each of these paintings would be site specific, I would like to spend time and respond to each area and space individually, taking into account its immediate surroundings and how it might fit within the wider context. These ‘foragers/explorers’ would be fictional representations of the community, exploring and interacting with the real environment, finding ‘treasure’ in unsuspecting places and offering small narrative clues to the viewer about their character. I like to offer a snapshot of a story or narrative, Once a painting is finished it belongs to the viewer and the public and they get to decide how the story unfolds.
